A group of gay men are making like Mystery Science Theatre 3000 as they screen the '50s thriller THE BAD SEED. They're hilarious, because yeah, it can be an awfully hokey flick for the most part. While they enjoy themselves and the movie, one of them, afflicted with heart failure, dies peacefully in the arms of his longtime love.
Nate wakes up one morning and realizes he's fucking his mother.
Rico mouths off about the funeral that the deceased man's lover is planning for him, an operatic tribute replete with lighting and staging and beautiful music. David yet again tells calls Rico on his narrow-mindedness. You'd think Rico, being a Latino-American and facing his own measure of prejudice, would be less culturally and socially ignorant. He gets more information that he wants when David enlightens him about the benefits of shaving "down there".
The funeral directors ponder the possibility of such a long relationship. The 2 gay men had been together for over 2 decades. Nate makes a good and true point though: If your partner lets you fuck around and have sex with whoever you want to, sure, the marriage or relationship would probably last forever. And the 2 guys "fucked like bunnies in the '70s."
The funeral is as beautiful and as moving as the surviving lover had hoped and planned it would be. Even though he doesn't show it, David is deeply affected by the love of the two men. So is Nate. And maybe Rico is too.
Evan Handler guest stars as a radical artist doing a lecture at LACArts. His slide show is proof that you can use any medium, any object, including the American Flag, to make an artistic commentary.
Did I mention earlier that Nate realizes he's fucking his mother? Yessiree. Lisa is EXACTLY like Ruth in wanting to CONTROL EVERYTHING. Even the course of a birthday party. Bettina talks about moving furniture around so that everyone can dance. Lisa has a look on her face that is somewhere between forlorn and murderous. Remember Season 4, and those dinners/get-togethers that Ruth wanted to control, and screamed when she couldn't.
Strangely though, Lisa does end up enjoying herself. It's Nate and David who end up uncomfortable. This must be the first birthday Ruth ever smiled at or something.
Olivier the art teacher sucks up to Russell, and then to Claire when Russell isn't looking. Later, Claire and Russell go on their own little journey, seeking out art to admire, and they end up bonding. But does Claire really find Russell "hot"???
When the party is over, Nate tries to have a moment of intimacy and sharing with his wife, but Lisa is hell-bent on ruining everything with her unending need of perfection. It is here where we begin to realize that Lisa's idea of what she and Nate ought to have together is the opposite of what it is.
I'll give this one an A-.
