A diabetic gentleman sneaks some of those yellow cling canned peaches. We don't see HOW he dies but it can be safely assumed he died of hyperglycemia.
At the Fisher home, Ruth is unhappy (what else is new?), and everyone can see plainly that she no longer loves George. She is only sticking around because she feels obligated to.
Nate is preoccupied with his step sister Maggie of late. He and Brenda have a bit of a spat after Nate refers to Bren as "Mommy" for Maya's sake, and Brenda, ever the scientist/psychologist, asks Maya if she can remember her "real" Mommy. I don't believe Brenda meant any harm to Maya. Nate seems very inflexible and unforgiving, even this early on in their marriage.
David and Keith visit an "adoption picnic" and a little boy named Anthony catches Dave's eye. Some powerful unseen force dictates to David that this child should be raised in David's home and none other. Keith is still dreaming of having a child that is biologically his, and the couple await the big news from their surrogate.
Claire is living back home with Ruth and the gang, but she can't shake the increasingly annoying calls from Billy, who practically begs her to meet him at a restaraunt.
The boring Julio storyline goes nowhere. He's been picking on a classmate. Rico and Vanessa get into it over how to discipline the kid. Yawn. The only time I paid attention was when Rico decided to liberally slop out Vanessa's personal problems for the principle of the school to munch on. What an ass. Vanessa, thankfully is too smart to fall for Rico's tricks.
I'd rather talk about Claire and Billy anyway. It seems once Claire has had enough of a boyfriend that is it. Russell wronged her and she didn't forgive him. The same happens with Billy, however, I don't believe Billy's mistakes are anywhere near the caliber Russell's were. Billy didn't cheat on Claire with Olivier. Billy's mistake was simply the one he makes constantly: He gets tired of living like a zombie and stops taking his pills. It doesn't matter that losing Claire prompted Billy to get back on his meds immediately. It's too late. Once Claire is done with you, she is done. I'm not even bashing her here. It seems to me that, looking back on her in the past few episodes, she never really trusted Billy anyway, and after the near-rape scene last episode, can I blame her? No. I think she figured she'd get out while the gettin' was good, lest she become the latest person to be held at knifepoint.
This latest chapter in Billy's life makes me feel especially bad for him. Mad Margaret, who goes to bat for her kids at all the wrong times, helps Billy to "ambush" Claire at another restaurant. But nothing they do can persuade Claire to give Billy another chance.
In an especially tense dinner scene, George and Nate have a clash over whether or not Nate has really gotten closure over Lisa.
Later, Ruth literally dumps George into his own place.
Keith and Dave's dizzy-dean surrogate Mom announces that she has gotten her period. There goes another dream down the drain, along with some serious buckage I'm sure. And so Keith gives in to David's adamant idea that little Anthony needs their love. Of course, nobody told D and K that Anthony comes with a bonus: His big brother Durrell.
Claire ends up having to take a job with a temp agency. Oh, boo hoo! What, is she ABOVE having a regular, boring, thankless job like the rest of the world?!
The family of the deceased peach-eater is reminiscent of the family of Thomas Romano from Season 1. It's a family that seems to have the name "Alan Ball" written on them, though I'm not sure if Ball penned this episode.
Thus far, Season 5 has been great. This wasn't a perfect episode, but it was one that gets an A- from me.
