I really liked this film. I just watched it again yesterday and it seems deeper and more poignant to me somehow than it did a few years ago when I first saw it. Jim Caviezel kills me! Especially those scenes in the cemetary when he finally visits his dead loved ones. He is truly wonderful. The real angel eyes are his, so big and blue and sad! Sigh...what a dreamboat.
Okay where was I? Yes, Jennifer Lopez gives an admirable performance as well. I read a review by a critic that says she's a lousy actress and doesn't even know how to cry onscreen. What?!!!! What about all those scenes with tears rolling down? Did you miss something buddy? Plus her character tries to be tough all the time. She's actually one tough broad, maybe too good looking to be a cop in the real world, but she had quite a mouth on her, which is pretty real if you ask me. I had a great time watching her kick that kid's ass (the one who was really cussing her out in the police car.) This movie is pretty entertaining in places you don't expect. It's not all soft and gooey and romantic, until the right moments. It's a good romantic drama.
We found the website of Marco Beltrami, who did the music, and it's a really good score, dreamy, romantic, otherworldly, but never overwhelming to the story onscreen. I also noticed a song playing at the parents' wedding reception, called "Here in my heart" which, if I remember right, was written in the late '80s or early '90s for Ryan White, a boy who made national headlines when he passed away from AIDS. Nothing to do with the movie, but I always loved the song and it was nice to hear it in a film.
The only time I was grossed out in this film is when Sharon's partner sort of propositioned her at the beginning of the film. Puh-leez guy! Give it a rest. He was married anyway, with a kid. Maybe he was only joking. Otherwise, I really like this movie. It makes me cry, and I don't cry easy, unless a dog is killed or something! I think I like this movie better than I used to!
