"You're beautiful, just the way you are, right here, right now..."
What a wonderful film, with a profoundly important message! Broken is a film filled with so many lost souls, all seeking what they think will give their lives meaning. The symbolic nature of each role, even the smallest one, does not take a lot of effort to see.
For Claire, no God, no religion, no Hope. Homeless and bedraggled, she is the remains of a life ruined.
With her ruination comes the wisdom of the movie. "Will will always return." When Hope relapses, Will comes back into her life.
Will says he's "not a good listener". They say "will-power" is what an addict needs to overcome their problems. But it seems that when you are truly bound by addiction, "will-power" is that you apply to stay in the rut of drugs, or any other addiction. Will must be tempered and disciplined, but he doesn't necessarily need to be broken. A broken will is not the same as a healed one. Hope's spirit seems to be broken, so we know a broken will doesn't cure our problems. The real cure for unhappiness and addiction is "willingly" surrendering yourself to the idea that you don't have to have the approval of the masses and don't have to be rich and famous to have God's love. He does want you to be happy and to know you are valuable to him. He loves you as you are, right here and right now.
If I sound preaching, it's because there is a very godly message in this movie. There is cursing and some nudity, but the spirituality of this film is unmistakable.
