CAESAR

Fan Review by Patsy, Feb. 16, 2008

"Julius Caesar" is an enthralling historic miniseries that I would recommend for any Roman history enthusiast or Jeremy Sisto fan. The costumery is beautiful, as are the production design sets. Starring an acclaimed multinational cast (including the late Richard Harris, Dumbledore from "Harry Potter" and Italian actress Valeria Golino of "Rain Man") "Julius Caesar" is a 4 hour mini-epic about the life and tragic death of the famous Roman "dictator". Some reviews have hailed, pardon the pun, the historical accuracy while others have criticized the very same.

But whether or not it's completely accurate shouldn't matter, as this is mainly a drama and not intended to be 100% accurate. If it had been, I doubt if I would have liked it this much. I have read up on the real Julius Caesar, and from what I gather, he was very different in personality than the one in this show. The real man was just another power-crazed dictator who could never be satisfied in any way. He was ruthless in his persuit of power, and used everyone he knew to get what he wanted. I am rather tired of men, past and present, and their constant need for power and dominion. It's just because their jealous of us women for being able to do something they can't. There's no need for me to say what that is, but it is the basis for why men feel the need to conquer everything and everyone they see. I hate war, and I usually avoid movies about any kind of war, and I think men are the reason we have wars.

But because the Julius Caesar depicted in this miniseries was so likeable (at least in part I), I did end up enjoying it. It still bugs me how he changed from part I to part II, but I guess I wasn't the only one. Valeria Golino is excellent as Julius's second wife who notices the change in his personality. Part II shows Caesar as he probably truly was, driven, selfish and overly-ambitious. He didn't even seem to care that his wife was devastated by his fling with Cleopatra.

Jeremy Sisto gave a great performance as always. I didn't like the character once part II started, but that says Sisto did a good job in a difficult character.
