This is an astounding film with an unforgettable performance of Sisto! It started out a little slowly, with rich people aboard a luxury boat owned by a lawyer played by Viggo Mortensen (my dream lover!) but Viggo is a very bad person in this film, very unscrupulous and a fraud. He and his friends, a medical student who is also a prostitute, a guitar musician and his pretty sister and her writer husband, go on a pleasure trip to Bermuda.
There is gorgeous photography of the pristine turquoise Caribbean Sea and beautiful tropical island scenery as well. Phillip and his friends see a boat on fire and take aboard Tim (Sisto) and a Cuban woman who is trying to sneak into America illegally. It turns out Tim is a man who became a woman, or almost. Phillip, who hates homosexuals and non-Americans, wants to throw them overboard, then Tim pulls a gun on them and demands to be taken to his rendezvous location where he will meet his boyfriend.
Needless to say there will be a raging battle between desperate Tim and Phillip, who is furious of the situation and determines to get the better of things soon. There are a great many shockers and twists and surprises in store. As many reviewer have said, nothing is what it appears. It is another indie film of people with secrets and lies and hidden evil, a psycho drama with more inner meaning than external action, which I like. There are however a few scenes of fighting for the guys who like to see men duke it out. Only problem is, it is actually 2 men beating to almost death what is pratically a woman. Not to mention Viggo's character also hits the Cuban woman in the face at least twice. This is a very repugnant character. It's good thing Viggo has played some great heroes because you can hate him a lot in this lawyer role. He is believable vicious! I watch some Lord of The Rings after this because I needed to see him be the good guy again!
Jeremy Sisto and Donal Logue play two characters who discover their lives are very similar, of pain and suffering. It almost evolves into a romance of some kind, and rather wonderous to see unfolding. Laura Del Sol as the Cuban woman and Pamela Gidley as the wife of Donal Logue also do good performances of support.
I enjoyed the film. It isn't perfect but I don't think it was deserving of the critics putting it down so much. It was definitely a very unusual and interesting character for Sisto.
