INTO TEMPTATION

Review from the Star Tribune

Filmed entirely in Minneapolis.

A sure sign of the end of summer is the diminishing premieres of blockbuster movies that ignite the screen with pyrotechnics, special effects and wizardry and earn tens of millions of dollars on opening weekends. The changing of the season brings more serious movies and independent films; those that often have an eye on industry awards and are shown in city “art houses.” Occasionally, a local film might emerge and create a buzz for a week or so and then, after the friends and family of the cast and crew have seen it, quietly disappear into obscurity. Given this community’s reaction to “Into Temptation,” it seems certain that this gem of a local film – and the creative team that produced it – have a much brighter future. Filmed entirely in Minneapolis, “Into Temptation” has, as its narrative arc, an inner-city Catholic priest who has a limited amount of time to possibly save the life of a prostitute who has declared her intention to commit suicide. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly slight premise. “Into Temptation” is an intelligent exploration of faith, forgiveness and redemption; book ended by the power of individual acts of kindness.

Jeremy Sisto (from the television series “Law and Order” and "Six Feet Under") and Kristin Chenoweth (Broadway’s “Wicked”) both give complex and nuanced performances in their lead roles. The supporting cast is led by former Minneapolitan Brian Baumgartner (“The Office”), and a who’s who of local actors supplemented with community members and neighbors. But like all thoughtful and innovative films, the real credit is due to the screenwriter and director. In this case, dual credit goes to Patrick Coyle for his crisp writing and his clear directing. He has created a film that stays with the audience and simply must be discussed – even days and weeks after viewing.

“Into Temptation” has been held over twice in Minneapolis. It deserves it. And it deserves a wider audience. Here’s hoping the film finds it. And that Patrick Coyle begins working on his next film – also filmed entirely in Minneapolis – soon.
