Forensic scientists are trying to piece together the horrific story, using the evidence gathered at the crime scenes. Blood types have been determined for each victim. It appears that the severed head in the freezer is that of a male, with long dark hair. There were large lacerations along the scalp and forehead. The dead animal in the freezer was badly freezer-burnt and it is impossible to tell how long it has been dead. The fur that had been removed was found on the body beside Canady's body.

The large bone saw and a scalpel had blood and hair on them belonging to Marks, Hooker, Stubbs and Hooper. A pair of scissors in the kitchen had blood on it belonging to the person whose head was found in the freezer and a second pair of scissors was found near Canady's body, with her blood on them.

The body of Marks had no wounds on it, aside from decapitation. Lerner's head had large stab wounds, possibly from a razor or a scalpel, above both ears.

Stubbs died after being stabbed in the abdomen with another scalpel, which was found still imbedded in the wound. Hooper had been stabbed in the throat, her jugular severed, and most probably bled to death quickly.

There are no clues or leads pointing to a suspect other than Canady, and police are still treating this case as murder spree/suicide.

Ellen Canady, the mother of May Canady, stated to police: "She was very quiet and kept to herself. There is no way she could have murdered a bunch of people."
