COMMENTARY
I've watched this shortie film half a dozen times at least and it's no more clear to me than it was at the beginning. In all honesty, I gotta say I've seen Jeremy in much MUCH better. This would have been probably an absolute fave of mine had it been feature length. Half of the characters in this movie were undeveloped and you wonder what the heck they're even doing, and why the heck they
EXIST.
Jeremy plays Deke Masters, a yuppie (What kind of career??? Where'd he get that sweet little blue convertible, EH???) who met a pretty gal named Emily Noodleman (Devon Odessa) and made a date with her to go get an espresso or something. He arrives at her shady home and the door is answered by her "shady" father, Jackie Noodleman (a very funny Allen Garfield who ended up being my fave character in this film, because he was such a weirdo
and made me laugh). Pretty soon it's apparent that Miss Emily is not there to go on this coffee date with Deke, as she is off making an "underground" film with some flaky pseudo-Brit type with a tired '80s hairdo. Jackie invites Deke into his home somewhat eagerly and introduces him to his biggest hobby: couch potato-ing. Jackie talks about his love for the Jewish people and movies with Patrick Dempsey while Deke simmers over being stood up and
being subjected to such mindless chitchat. Jackie says and does a few other things, things that would have made me, had I been in Deke's skin, leave the scene in a big-ass hurry!!! But curiously, Deke lingers. After this, I'm lost. Jackie takes pity on poor stood up Deke, calling him, "You big dumb SOB, you had a date didn't you???" and then offers his other daughter, Barri (Poppy Montgomery) as a replacement "date". To be bald, pun intended,
Jackie tells Deke to go have sex with her. What's Jackie's motive??? Anyone know??? I can't figure it out. Barri turns out to be a very nice, pretty weirdo who hasn't left her home or had sex in over a year. Did Jackie and Emily bring Deke to their home to "cure" Barri??? Or is Jackie just a perverted old fossil looking for a sick thrill??? What kind of father would tell some guy to sleep with his daughter??? Questions questions questions!!!
I'm not to proud to ask for help!!! If someone has answers I'd be forever grateful!!! I don't wanna give too much more away, after all this movie is 16 minutes long!!! But Deke and Barri end up "not having relations", LOL, and once again, Deke is sitting on the couch with the ol' pervert.
Innnnnnnn the meantime, Miss Emily, you know, the original gal that Deke thought he was gonna have coffee with, is sitting at the table with her frizzy haired filmmaker friend and two other weirdos: Astrid (Meadow Sisto) and Buffy Walter-Koenig or whatever the heck HER name was. I have no clue what these sequences were about. Astrid twirls her hair and talks of writing a rock opera while Buffy sips wine and whines about how if she were ugly or
ethnic, she would have gotten farther in her career. Hmmmmmmm...I just don't get it. Am I missing extra brain cells that are required to understand??? Forget I asked that. I am definitely missing some brain cells but that's not the point!!! What is the point??? Or is it meant to be completely pointless???!!!
I was so jazzed to see this flick when I first heard about it. Of course I also thought it was feature length too. I also wanted to hear the notorious Cyndi Lauper song but I guess that was supposed to have all happened off screen. The Voice Of Reason (very well done by Jonathan Silverman) tells us that Deke will meet his fate trying to get rid of Cyndi Lauper on the radio, but you don't get to see or hear anything of the kind. Lots of JS fans
say this is their fave film of his. Well, sorry. This is the only film I've seen of his that I was less than impressed with. It had its funny moments, but the overall thing is frustrating.
The Ol' Pervert!!!
