The Method is a peculiar and amusing film about filmmaking. There is creativity in the direction, effectively dramatic music and pretty nice acting, though I strongly believe Elizabeth Hurley is miscast. I enjoy her mostly in comedies and modern stories. She didn't seem to fit with a historical thriller. The costumes are pretty nice, especially Belle's dress gowns. Set decoration is well done.
The story is of an actress who has some sort of chemical imbalance in her mind and needs to take medication to temper the symptoms. Her mother rules her whole life, especially her professional life as a film actress. The mother also rules over all the crew of film makers. Pushed to the limit by her mother's controlling ways, the actress, while preparing for her big breakout role as a true serial killer at the start of the 20th century, begins behaving bizzare. She skips her pills, hooks up with young guys at bars, and sits and mutters to herself while knitting. People begin to find bodies on the set, most with their throats slit, and everyone begins to wonder if the actress is committing murders to better get in part!
An amusing but sometimes strange film. You never really figure out if the actress is the one murdering people. There is a debate about it being the controlling mother or the ex-boyfriend (played by Jeremy Sisto, who did a great job). Clearly the actress is mentally ill, but is she insane enough to do such atrocities? During the story, she hears a voice. I found the voice annoying (a fake accent too) and hated listening to it. The voice says that the actress is the one who has killed people, but you can't be sure. The ending is nothing less than insanely bad and will leave you very frustrated!
I don't like to be so critical, because there was so much good about this movie, but I must agree with the others that somebody ruined a good idea and the result is just too messy to truly enjoy. The 2 best actors of the film are Sisto and Carmen Du Satouy (as the mother, very elegant, attractive, yet quietly malicious and controlling).
