A paranoid big brother universe. Who can you trust?
Paranoia 1.0 is a dark, sombre and terrifying movie through and through, which none the less had an almost alluring effect on me. We step into this universe (physically an apartment building) which is pervaded with paranoia and mistrust. Here, the main character Simon (played by Jeremy Sisto) lives, surrounded by an odd mix of characters with their different distinctive marks and eccentricities. It'a a no-man's land where the battle over the residents' brains is fought. I wouldn't call it science fiction, because I think that could possibly deter some people from watching it. The term "psychological future thriller" is more correct, I think, though I have never ever seen a movie like this before.
What's
?
The movie appears as a unity, because of a number of factors. Firstly, because of the dramaturgic thoroughly prepared plot. Secondly, because of the way it is shot - the saturated atmosphere is absolutely breathtaking. Thirdly, because of a number of brilliant performances by a fabulous cast.
I must point out Jeremy Sisto, who so eminently pictures the increasingly desperate and paranoid computerexpert Simon. He lives in a big brother society, where his apartment seems to be the only place where no one can watch him - where he is safe. He gradually looses control of his life, his body and his mind. He's looking for answers, but the more he searches, the worse it gets. You really sympathize with Simon. Who's a friend and who's an enemy in this universe?
