This film is a good example of being surprised and getting something you would not expect. This film is marketed as comedy in my country (Suomi) and it has a lot of very funny comedy. It is a sex comedy in many ways. But this film is different from Now You Know, another sex comedy film of Jeremy Sisto. I tend to parallel some films of Jeremy, but that doesn't mean I like one over the other film.
Some Girl (Hvilken Pige! title from Danmark is the DVD I possess) is a comedy mostly of a female perspective. There is sexual dialogue and content and a small amount of nudity, as in Now You Know, and I like Now You Know every bit as much as Hvilken Pige/Some Girl. Both films are funny and charming and have a softer side to them. The contrast I have observed is that while Now is meant to be funny over all things, mostly to get you laughing, Some Girl has a startling display of emotional depth that will surprise you into crying.
I never could have guessed a "comedy" could make me cry or think or be so saddened over the most piteous of characters. It will frustrate you, but not in a bad way. Rather it will give you a curious feeling of invigoration. More importantly, it will make you realize, that if you have ever felt like you will never find real love in this world, if you feel like a loser nobody will ever love, you are not alone.
Marissa Ribisi as Claire is superb as the sweet but misguided heroine of the film. She wants to find her soul mate but she is looking in the wrong places, and she is impatient, feeling like her time is running out fast and she will end up a lonely old maid, or worse, like her friends (Juliette Lewis as April is wonderfully wickedly and sadly troubled in a different but equally painful way to Claire), who gave up on "love" long ago and only live to sleep with as many men as they can, if only so they can get together and comfort themselves with tales of conquest. If they can't have the love of a man, they can have each other's company, yes?
Claire meets a handsome man named Chad (Jeremy Sisto) and falls madly for him, only to have him break her heart only a few days later. Does she want too much too soon? Is she too demanding of total love when the relationship is too new for that time? I did not like Jeremy's character at all. Even if Claire was too pushy. No matter what is wrong with Claire, my heart bleeds for her. There is a scene in the bathroom where Claire is throwing up and drunken, yet crying so hard. Real tears, real snot, real crying, and it never fails to make me cry with her. Yes, the depth of emotion is quite remarkable. That's what made me love this film.
