SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER

Fan review by Danielle, who saw this play in New York

Jeremy played so many different defender roles, it's hard to remember them all, but it was great to see that they let the guest cast have lots of voices. There is a more thorough list of the defenders at the Speak Truth To Power website here: http://www.speaktruth.org/ But among the many, I do remember these defenders he spoke as:

Elie Wiesel (Romania/US) - It was a great quote about children, probably this famous Elie quote: "What I want, what I have hoped for all my life, is that my past should not become your children's futuree."

Bruce Harris (Guatemala/Covenant House worker) - Jeremy told this story of Bruce's: "Three men with machine guns went to the gate, asked for me by name, and said, "We’ve come to kill him." The guard was terrified, and said I wasn’t there. They got back in the vehicle, and came back down the street and opened fire with machine guns. Thank God none of the kids was shot. When something like that happens, you call the police—funny in this case. So the police came very quickly and they took away all the bullets. They took away all the evidence. It shows how naive we were. When Covenant House in New York heard about the incident, they sent me a bulletproof jacket. It had a money-back guarantee, if for any reason it didn’t work!" (this got an ironic laugh out of the crowd, seeing how aburd it was that a bulletproof jacket was the only help sent)

Bishop Wissa (Egypt): "These are my children... If you were at your house and someone was beating up your child, wouldn’t you stop them?"

There were some very emotional moments. I have to say, the actress telling the story of the woman who faced genital mutilation made me tear up. In the very last minutes of the play, all the actors stood up & spoke aloud as their various defender voices, speaking over one another. Then the "narrators" acting as the "torturers" had the final word, saying these things will just continue on because people will go back to their daily lives, and watching tv, and forget about these atrocities. It was powerful stuff! Again, they all did a great job & I recommend the play to everyone. Props to Mr. Sisto for supporting a good cause.
