THIS SPACE BETWEEN US is the first film in which Jeremy Sisto was cast in a lead role (even though JESUS was released first, it was filmed approx. 6 months after this one was.) It is a personal favorite, especially for Mari, an emotional, heartwarming, funny but not sentimental story about a young filmmaker whose wife is killed in a car wreck, and is known as a semi-autobiography for director Matthew Leutwyler, who later directed DEAD & BREAKFAST.
The cast of TSBU includes Poppy Montgomery, Erik Palladino, Clara Bellar, Vincent Ventresca, Alex Kingston, Taylor Negron, Andy Berman, Vanessa Marcil, singers Charles Lowery and Kate Donnellon, and Garry Marshall.
TSBU premiered at the 1999 Seattle International Film Festival to rave reviews. It won the Moxie! Award for Best Comedy at the 2000 Santa Monica Film Festival.
In October 2000, it was one of the very first feature length films to be shown in its entirety on the internet, on CinemaPop.com from Kanakaris Wireless Media. Shortly before its official theatrical and home video distribution was to happen in 2001, its distributor, Phaedra Cinema, a well-known indie company whose films included SUDDEN MANHATTAN directed by Adrienne Shelly, went out of business. TSBU had its own site at Phaedra, which included a cool trailer.
TSBU remained MIA for several years before IDT Entertainment, parent company for Anchor Bay Entertainment (later bought by Starz Entertainment), finally acquired TSBU and released it to DVD in October 2006.
