Mari (she was my neighbor) and I saw this one years ago. I remember because she had just come home from a trip to Arkansas. It was in 2001. I can still remember this movie even though it's been a long time since I saw it. It was such a sad and depressing movie that I didn't like it much. I won't give out any spoilers, but I just didn't like this film. It's not a "bad" film, it's just too sad for me. The actors were all excellent and the story was very touching.

Maybe I should rephrase myself. I did like this film, up until about the end. It was just a very tragic and violent ending to a couple of lives that were not easy to begin with. Actually the movie started with a violent death too, now that I look back.

I prefer comedies, and there really wasn't any comedy at all in this movie. It was straight up serious all the way through, and that's fine. It's just not my kind of film. I guess if I wasn't affected the way I was, I would not be human, but I don't think I'll ever want to see this film ever again. It was just too depressing.

Jeremy Sisto was excellent which was expected. His character Sonny was a very unhappy one. He lives in a hovel that might once have been a farmhouse with his parents who act like they hate him, and he makes friends with a little boy with Down's and his older sister. His best friend wants to go away to school and get out of that dead-end town.

It's just sad because Sonny is a very smart kid like his friend. He didn't seem to realize that they both could have a future, not just his friend.

The end made me say "It was just a waste." And it made me mad at the friend for leaving him, even though the friend deserved a good life. Let's just cut to the chase. This is a very sad movie. If you don't mind depressing movies, it's a very well-acted one. If sad movies bother you, by all means skip it.
