Fan Review by Sam
All of the user comments and reviews I've read of this
movie are glowing. They say it's poignant and
underrated and with great acting. I thought the acting
was great, obviously. I have to admit that I thought
the movie itself was painfully cliche though. Every
Southern boy from the wrong side of the tracks movie
element is present and accounted for. There are the
two friends, one a badass and the other Actually
Really Smart. Then there's a girl from the right side
of the tracks who is sympathetic and beautiful and
cares for the one who is Actually Really Smart, who
encourages him to take his big opportunity that is
often the crux of these movies to get out of that town
and make something of himself. It contains a mild pet
peeve of mine found in a lot of movies about writers.
In those kinds of movies, the character's talent is so
amazing that it transcends all boundaries and someone
higher up has taken notice and offered them a new life
because of it. A lot of the time it's implied that the
movie itself is the story, or that the voice-over
narration is part of the character's writing. But in
Trash, like in a lot of movies, the voice-over
narration wasn't stellar. I found myself thinking,
"They gave him money and a scholarship for writing
like this?" One of the only movies I've ever seen
about a writer where the voice-over narration sounds
like award winning writing is Stand By Me. On the plus
side, Trash isn't a bad little movie. I enjoyed it.
From a Jeremy perspective, it's a great movie. It's
wall-to-wall him, in nearly every scene. His character
was infinitely more interesting than the narrator's,
watching how Sonny handled the parents fighting and
how he loves kittens and children, although when you
combine the love of kittens and children with the
heavy handed Jesus comparison, the tender side of his
character could have come across as corny. I credit
him for the fact that it didn't. His acting in this
surprised me. There was something about it that was
very fluid and seamless. I know, I know. Of course I'm
going to say it's brilliant, but I really thought it
was. I barely recognized him in it. He completely
disappeared into the character, any hint of his real
persona dissolved in this Sonny James kid. I'm sure
he's proud of it, and if he's not, he should be. I
liked seeing him act with Marisa Ryan too. There was a
scene when they're first in the car, just driving down
the road, where I got a hint of that familiarity. From
a physical perspective, this movie is probably the
best looking I've ever seen him, bar none. It comes on
so loaded that you really have to be sitting down for
it. haha. I like anything that Eric Michael Cole is in
too, although the difference in skill and talent comes
across as painfully obvious to me when they're on
screen together. That's just my personal and
admittedly biased opinion though. Eric Michael Cole is
cool too.
