I really enjoyed the film a lot when I saw it back in 2000. It started off in a series of flashbacks Alex is having about his wife. It kind of sets up the film. It showed the two of them at some sort of awards show where he won a big award for his film. He seemed to be on top of the world with his wife being his inspiration (boy is the actress who plays her gorgeous).
They never explain her death other that it's inferred that she was in an accident. She's already dead when the film begins. It's two years later and he's still extremely depressed. I remember that he finally realizes that he needs to get his life in order and he sets off to visit all different kinds of friends. And throughout his travels he carries around this tape of his wife's voice on it that he keeps playing over and over periodically. I do remember his sex addicted friend. He's obsessed with sex and is stunned when Alex admits he hasn't had sex with anyone since his wife. The entire movie is about him trying to overcome the tragedy of his wife's death. She appears to him at various times - both in flashbacks and real time.
Jeremy did such a good job at portraying grief, the wrongness of his wife's death at the height of their happiness really was the theme of the movie and very moving. Ever since watching it, I've been anxious to get it on video/DVD.
Here's to keeping our fingers crossed!
