CAUTION: POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Wow! This is one of the best movies I have seen this year. So okay, I know this year is barely beginning. What I mean to say is that this is one of the best ones I have seen in the past year!
"Waitress" is a very warm and cute story about a pretty young waitress named Jena (Keri Russell of "Felicity") somewhere in the bible-belt region who is unhappy in her marriage and planning to leave her husband. But just as she is getting psyched up to do so, she finds out she is expecting his baby!
Anyone who has ever felt trapped in a marriage that stinks could relate to this movie. Jena's spouse is played by Jeremy Sisto, and at one time, it seems he might have been a good husband, or at least a semicharming one! He is attractive physically, and has some moments where he can be almost adorable, but mostly, he is a frightful control-freak, so jealous of Jena being so beautiful that he keeps her under his thumb. He never lets her go anywhere and takes all her money from her job in a pie diner and keeps it. He even talks about making her quit her job so he can keep even more control of her.
It's scary when you read reviews that condemn Jena for having an affair and claim that her husband is correct to take her money and dominate her life. But then I guess the world is filled with crazy people!
Jena ends up having an extramarital affair with her new gynocologist (Nathan Fillion of "Serenity") and between him and her job of creating unique pies, she has some happiness during her long, miserable pregnancy. But she still has to face her situation and cannot escape forever in affairs and pies. I won't spoil the end, but it does satisfy without either resorting to violence (Jena killing her mean husband) or stupidity (Jena and the gyno divorcing their spouses, getting married and living happily ever after).
It is a good comedy which is mostly light, but has some very jarring scenes, thanks mostly to Jeremy Sisto. I think his acting in this movie is deserving of an Academy Award. His character is menacing and sad and pathetic all at once.
