UPDATE 11/16/06: Though many of us are looking foreward to the release of this film, it is with a degree of sadness. As you know, the director, Adrienne Shelly, was found murdered earlier this month. No matter that her killer is now in custody. The terrrible loss and pain her family is facing is immeasurably worse than we fans having lost a great actress and director in the indie film world. Please visit Film Maker Magazine for info about the Adrienne Shelly Foundation.
WAITRESS had been submitted to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival shortly before Shelly's death.
Raves:
"Waitress is a light, breezy romantic comedy with a crackerjack cast and a certain degree of faux-Southern charm that never descends to cornpone mawkisness, and also has a whip-smart comedic sensibility in every scene." James Rocchi, Cinematical
"...Waitress is a delight, a refreshing comedy that mixes a bunch of familiar ingredients in offbeat ways that pay off every time, much in the way that its title character Jenna (the fabulous Keri Russell)blends, say, blackberries with bittersweet chocolate in her universally beloved pies." Glenn Kenny, Premiere Magazine
"Adrienne Shelly's film is a fun but sincere exploration of this conundrum, full of off-kilter characters who don't talk like anyone in real life, but sound a truthful chord." Jeremy Mathews, Film Threat
"Funny, tender, quirky and sad...{WAITRESS has}
homespun charms and Southern small-town setting...the characters are always believable." Patricia Chui, Cinematical
"...director Adrienne Shelly boldly defies convention with her radiant and gorgeously stylized feature film, Waitress...Russell delivers a wonderful, complex performance as Jenna, a repressed woman reaching for happiness, while Shelly infuses the film with a luminous magical sensibility and an endearing sense of humor. Confident and clear in vision, Waitress makes delicious upside-down cake of the Cinderella myth." Shari Frilot, Sundance Film Festival 2007
"Waitress is a real actor’s movie, with each part written with great elan to have its own psychology and even its own dialect. Each player gets to be fully dimensional and has bright and defining moments that crystallize into an affectionate if gently satirical ensemble portrait of a certain kind of working-class Southern-ness." Ray Greene, BoxOffice.com
"...Adrienne Shelly's final film is an untrammeled delight, with sunny good humor and perfectly pitched performances." Sam Adams, Philadelphia City Paper
"In her third film as director and writer, Shelly scores a personal triumph...Waitress is her buoyant legacy." Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"WAITRESS serves up a sweet, sassy and delicious slice of life tale -- as it reveals the power of friendship, motherhood and the willingness to take a chance...[a]vibrantly different romantic comedy..." Pam and George Singleton, Reel Movie Critic
"I’ll state unequivocally that this is a chick flick. But it’s a chick flick with an edge. A lot of the edge is due to the powerful performance from Jeremy Sisto. Earl easily could have been a cookie-cutter bad guy but subtle layers of insecurity and fear often surface and you understand him as the person and as the monster." Maura Reilly, Monsters & Critics
"[WAITRESS is] the kind of sly, witty independent gem that rolls through every few years, lighting up crowds and forcing men to admit they were wrong when they thought they were being dragged to another chick flick. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that it could be a sleeper hit with good word-of-mouth and fanfare upon a wider release." Bill Clark, From The Balcony
"Similar in spirit to Little Miss Sunshine, this movie will steal your heart and send you on your way rejoicing..." Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality & Practice
"Heartfelt and intelligent, with a pinch of whimsy..." Lisa Rose, The Star-Ledger
"One of the most brilliant aspects of Waitress is how well drawn out the characters are. None of the characters are perfectly good or bad. Even Earl, the man we are supposed to hate is given some deserved layers of sympathy and pity...the biggest praises have to go to Jeremy Sisto as Earl. He is our villain but a character full of condolence. The audience goes from hating him to empathizing with him in a single scene. Finding the right balance in a role so extreme is rare and finding an actor who can do it is even rarer." G Murray, Pop Syndicate
"... a romantic comedy that leads with a passion and honesty few in the genre even bother to pursue. It's candy, but with a deliciously sour center." Brian Orndorf, Axcess News
"...a gentle, lovely film...Keri Russell is a revelation...[Jeremy Sisto gives a] slimy, uncompromising performance..." Eugene Novikov, Film Blather
"If "Waitress" was one of Jenna's pies, it would be a sky-high lemon meringue -- light, airy, not too sweet, with a tart, satisfying, filling." Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter
"'Waitress' is a beautifully designed, tenderly written and sensitively acted film about the bitter and sweet moments of daily life. With insight and humor, Adrienne Shelly's cinematic swansong is, much like Jenna's pies, a masterful creation you will not forget." Richard Propes, Independent Critics.com
"With offbeat humor, deadpan dialogue and heartfelt honesty, "Waitress" moves the romantic comedy to new grounds." James Adams Smith, University of Delaware Reviewer
