WRONG TURN

Fan Review by Ingo, Sept. 8, 2009

You cannot beat Wrong Turn for stomach turning horror. The villains are insanely evil, and presented as perfectly, mercilessly evil as well, but also, they made me laugh in a kind of scathing way. This is not my favorite kind of film. I thought it was rather dumb in so many ways, and yet, I have to admit, it is entertaining. It is a mixture of annoyance and cringing when I hear the skinny inbred brother do his coyote-like laughter. Even more so when the bigger hulks do their gorilla sounds while chasing the young victims through the forests. So the villains are insane and evil and grotesquely ugly, just hideous! But they are also really silly and make me roll my eyes. The writing is a little dumb at times, like when the girl picks up the barbed wire that blew their tires, "Look! Someone did this on purpose!" No shitting! I don't think I would have guessed that on my own!

I would much rather watch an intelligent drama or thriller film that makes me think about things, so no, this isn't my favorite thing, but Jeremy Sisto is very cute and sweet in this story (I didn't see this movie for a long time believing he was playing one of the hillbillies, just another villain role, which I get tired of for a while) and I was so glad to see him playing a nice and heroic person. It was very affecting when Scott meets his ending. One thing I have to say for this horror film that sets it apart from most. Even though it's ultraviolent like most of today's films, and even has the same kinds of torture scenes, I found myself actually liking the characters. That really impresses me.

So this is my review. Not my favorite horror (I think it is a tie between Dead And Breakfast and May for me) but not the worst either, and Jeremy has a good role. It is very gory, so not for small children. The makeup and special effects are impressive and effectively nauseating! The nasty flies in the cabin, the disgusting bathtub and toilet, and the teeth in the jars, yuck!
