THE YOUNG AMERICANS
Fan Review by Mari, May 23, 2006
THE YOUNG AMERICANS was a drama series from some of the creators of DAWSON'S CREEK. It aired in 2000 and was cancelled after just a few episodes, but it did have a following in fans of actors like Ian Somerhalder and Kate Bosworth.
The story is of an all-boys Ivy League school somewhere in New England. It would have traced the lives of the students as they struggled to make the grade.
I only watched the original pilot, which I bought from eBay. It was attempting to establish the characters. Among them, a boy whose dad thinks he's a failure, another boy whose father is the Dean, and a third boy who is in disguise.
Jeremy Sisto signed on for this series, most likely as either a recurring or regular character, a literature teacher named Finn ("No mister, just Finn.") The character is all-business, very serious and stern. In the pilot, there was an intriguing little side-story going on with Finn being involved with a married teacher, but as Jeremy only appeared in this pilot, which was never really aired on the WB, the story never continued or ended. The reason the pilot didn't air might be that Jeremy decided against doing this show and instead did the miniseries JESUS.
Which, honestly, was a good thing. I'm going to be kind of mean now. THE YOUNG AMERICANS wasn't very good. The writing and acting were mostly either bland or just plain bad. The actors probably tried very hard to do their best, but the material was just bad. Sisto, of course, didn't do any bad acting. His character seemed from another planet, the only real live person against a backdrop of blonde pretty boys who spent so much time topless that all you remembered about them was their tanned pectorals.
If any fans of Somerhalder, Bosworth, Sisto or anybody else in this show would like to try to get it on DVD, please email me. Or just go to Ebay and do a search. There may be other copies of this show if you want it. My copy has slightly grainy picture quality.
All still caps are the property of Warner Bros. and the WB Network.
